Additional celebrations rang out in heaven on Easter Sunday as Basil Gutoskie was joyfully reunited with his family. Basil was predeceased by his parents, Bernard and Mary, as well as his siblings Gerard, Cecil (Rita), Leonard (Yolande), Rita Gauthier (Roland), Teresa, and Joan. And, no doubt, Basil had a tender reunion with his only grandchild, Baby David. Basil is survived by his wife of 64 years, Helen, his children Gerry (Bobbie), Lynn, and Frank (Linda), as well as his brother-in-law, Tony Chapeskie, and many nieces and nephews.
It is fair to say that Basil simply ran out of steam. Perhaps conspicuous consumption of maple cookies and Reese’s Pieces played a role. They kept him going a long time, though, so perhaps not. Regardless, his work here is done and his last crossword puzzle completed.
Basil was a quiet, humble man who loved God, history, and anything sweet. He taught at St. Patrick’s High School in Ottawa for ten years before returning to his hometown of Barry’s Bay when MVDHS opened in 1967. He taught English at MV for 25 years. Upon his retirement, Basil and Helen enjoyed visiting the boys in BC and exploring Canada’s scenic west coast. While in BC, they joined the local Seniors Centre and made lasting friendships. Locally, Dad enjoyed volunteering with Meals on Wheels, friendly games of euchre, and monthly dances at the legion. He particularly enjoyed Ottawa Valley fiddle tunes. A keen follower of current events, Dad was quick to educate others on the evils of multinationals. (Cue the eyerolls.) We will miss him and his lessons terribly, though, and are grateful for the ones he learned from his friend, Bill W. Faith was the foundation of our father’s life, and the Serenity Prayer gave him guidance and peace.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Basil's memory may be made to St. Hedwig's Parish, Our Lady Seat of Wisdom College, Bonnechere Manor Foundation or the charity of your choice.
