Charles (Chuck) Kirkwood Sharp II
(1948 – 2021)
Charles (Chuck) Sharp, staff member of Madonna House died peacefully at St. Mary’s, Madonna House, on September 10, 2021.
Chuck was the first of twelve children born to Charles Kirkwood Sr. and Marilyn Taggart Sharp. As a family, they made a retreat at Cana Colony, Madonna House Aquia, in Stafford, VA in 1965. Chuck volunteered for a week after the retreat, and returned the following summer for another two weeks of volunteer work after his high school graduation. He made his first visit to Madonna House Combermere in February 1967, and discovered his vocation.
He became an applicant in September 1968, and immediately was asked to help out at Marian Centre Edmonton for a couple of months, after which he returned to Combermere to complete his applicancy and made his First Promises on March 25, 1969.
For Chuck’s first assignment, he was sent to Our Lady of Aquia, the birthplace of his vocation. He spent many years in Combermere after that, serving on the local volunteer fire department among other things. He was asked to go to Marian Centre Regina, and after a couple of years was appointed the Local Director there. He later returned to Combermere, and after a short time in Madonna House, Washington, DC, returned to Edmonton. He began alternating between Combermere and Edmonton. While in Combermere, he was assigned to St. Benedict Acres farm of Madonna House.
Chuck was predeceased by his parents and by his youngest brother, James, who died of leukemia at an early age. He is survived by his siblings, Taggart, Victoria, Thomas, Ann Elizabeth, Matthew, Margaret, David, Mary, Andrew and Philip.
A public viewing will be held at Heubner Funeral Home according to the present protocols on Tuesday, September 14 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The Wake Service and Funeral Mass will be held privately for members of the community on Wednesday and Thursday, with internment at the Madonna House cemetery following the Funeral Mass.
Madonna House community would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Ray Dawes for his attentive care for Chuck, and to the Bayshore nurses and the Community Paramedics who assisted Chuck so generously in his final weeks, as well as to all those who helped care for him at St. Mary’s.
