SMITH, Gerald J.
Born 1938 in Rouyn-Noranda, QC. Died Nov. 23, 2020 in Ottawa, ON., after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer, aged 82.
Gerald “Curly” “Gerry” James Smith grew up on the shores of Cedar Lake in Brent, ON before moving with his blended family to Capreol, ON where they made their home in a converted boxcar. “Curly” earned his Lineman ticket with the Canadian National Railway working all over Ontario for 12 years before moving to Pembroke where he started his family and enjoyed a long career as an Electrician with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), Chalk River, ON.
He is survived by his 3 children Stephen, Scott and Cheryl and their mother Teresa Smith, his brother Terry O’Connor (North Bay) and sister Betty & Owen Bailey (Belleville). Cherished grandfather of James, Amanda, Megan and Ella. Predeceased by parents Christina & Dinnes O’Connor and siblings Dennis “Doc” O’Connor, Margaret “Peg” O’Connor and Larry O’Connor. Fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews. He enjoyed a life of snowmobiling, fishing and hunting.
The Smith family will receive visitors at the Heubner Funeral Home - 43 Stafford St, Barry's Bay, ON between 10:00 am - 11:30 am on Dec 12. A mass will be held also on Dec 12 at 1:00 pm at the Holy Canadian Martyrs Church, 2797 Dafoe Rd, Combermere, ON. Weather permitting, interment will follow at the Church of St. Francis de Sales in Latchford Bridge, ON.
COVID-19 restrictions are in effect thus limited space is available at the funeral mass so please contact Stephen or Scott Smith to RSVP. All are welcome at the Funeral Home and internment. Masks are required and two metres physical distancing should be maintained.
