Have just learned of the passing of a member of my Ridley class '54.

I have many memories of our times together at Ridley. Jim, "Haskins" was a great swimmer and I will never forget his kindness in teaching, coaching, and encouraging me to receive a senior swimmer award after he taught me how to swim underwater.

My sincere sympathy to Lorraine and sons. Jim was a wonderful person who did so much for the community. I first met Jim taking University of Ottawa courses at the off campus site held at St. John Bosco School. I particularly remember a English course where Jim did a very interesting and informative presentation of the area of Toronto known as "Cabbage Town". I had never heard of it before then. Our deepest sympathy to The Family. The world has lost one of its angels on earth. Mr. Haskins was teacher , father, and yes even a friend to all the students in his life. It has been many years since I attended school at MVDHS but even to this day I still remember him as one of the greatest influences in my life. RIP Hassie and thankyou for your service and kindness to all who were fortunate to have known you.

There are not many people in your lifetime who leave a lasting impression and I can say, without reservation, that Jim Haskins was one of those people for me. From ski lessons when I was in elementary school, where he was simply "Jim" to musicals, glee club and grad themes in high school, where he was "Mr. Haskins" (or Hassie as we affectionately referred to him) to adulthood where he again was simply "Jim" he inspired me in ways I simply cannot count.

Though you have left us now, you will remain alive in the hearts and minds of all of the students whose lives you enriched.

Loraine, Jim and John and your families, my sincerest condolences. Know that I am thinking of you all at this very difficult time.

I am very sad to hear of Jim's passing, and grateful for the great deal of mentoring I received from him in my role as RCDSB administrator. He taught me the importance of a sense of humor and of not taking oneself too seriously. He shared his tremendous and unflagging passion for MVDHS in a way that influenced and inspired that school community for many decades. My deepest sympathy to Loraine and his family.

A great man with a smile and words of encouragement for everybody. He always had that twinkle in his eye. Hassie touched so much and so many people at MVDHS in such a positive way. From the Glee Club and competitions at the Kiwanis music festival to sports teams and great decorations for all the graduation ceremonies. The whole community looked forward to the musicals----he had a job for everybody..... set construction and design, costume design, the band and the actors. He let everybody know just how valuable they were to the success of the shows. I am so fortunate to have had Hassie touch my life.

My condolence Lorsine and family. Jim was a very gentle loving person and he will be remembered for all the good things he did for this area, not only at the high school but his involvement with the Lion's Club - the involvement for the tree drive after the tornado went through Combermere, the Santa Claus parade, Terry Fox run handing out refreshments.. He gave his time to all. Thank you Jim. You will be missed.

Oh that smile and witty sense of humour.

Probably hands down one of the best teachers I have ever had. My love for all things science was instilled through his innovative ways of teaching. His classes were always fun.

I saw a photo of him in the newspaper a few weeks ago and I thought my gosh he is as handsome now as he was in the 70's. I was a little girl with a secret crush.

You Mr. Haskins live on through all of us that had the pleasure of knowing you at one point or another. Rest in Peace, my condolences to the family at this difficult time.

I am certain that many young women will remember Mr. Haskins as such a strong inspiration in music and the Madawaska Valley HS Minstrels, as he mentored and encouraged me in my love of vocal music; I never was taught by Mr. Haskins, in the classroom, but I learned plenty about love of music and performance and growing up outside of the classroom from him in our festival events and performances.Having taught over 32 years in hs, I realized a long ago that he influenced me in my choice.

I was never in one of Hassie's classes, not one. But I'd always liked his easy manner and quick smile. When I was in my final year of high school, my parents were going through an ugly, vicious, acrimonious divorce. It was hard to be at home.

Hassie never ever directly brought up my home situation, but Barry's Bay was a small town and many people knew what was going on. Instead, in his quiet way, he pulled me aside one day and asked me to help out on the production for the musical for that year, The Sound of Music.

I didn't want to do it--I didn't want to do anything with all that going on--but Hassie was insistent and I finally caved. He gave me various small jobs to do, painting sets, backstage work...anything to keep me busy and away from the horror of home.

And he pulled me away from the misery. He gave me back my self-worth at a time when I had none. He was the kind word and the warm hand on my shoulder when I desperately needed one.

When he'd walk by me at time, he'd usually just give me a nod and say, "Everything okay?" When I'd say yes, he'd just smile and keep on going.
We hear so much about those that are bad at what they do, and we never hear enough about those that are phenomenal at what they do. Mr. Haskins was never larger than life, he wasn't a well-known personality.

But to me, in 1981, he saved my life. He pulled me back from the brink with nothing more than quiet empathy and a smile. I loved him for that, and I'll always be indebted to him. He came along when I needed him, and he helped me more than he ever knew.

After the last show of the musical, there was an after party. At one point, he came up to me to thank me for my work. Instead, I started tearing up and struggled to find the words to let him know what he'd done for me. I actually never got much more than, "I...uh..." He put a hand on my shoulder, smiled and said, "It's okay."
And it was. He'd made things much more okay. He'd saved me.

Jim Haskins is a hero. And I just wanted everyone to be able to look at his picture and realize that. We don't see too many authentic heroes in our life.

He was one.

Thank you, Hassie. Rest in peace.

Of all the MVDHS staff that have known in my life (as a student, parent, community member), I'm certain that Jim had the broadest positive influence.
Boundless energy, creativity, patience, intelligence, and an innate sense of relation to youth earmarked his fabulous career. His work for others continued in his retirement and I was so happy to be re-united with him on the committee to save our ski hill.
God Bless Jim and be at Peace. Sincere condolences from all of my family to all of you.

Mr Haskins was a very special teacher. He made learning fun and we all had fun on those outdoor education courses even if we did get wet. 😀 I moved away after high school but when I would come home and drive by the school I often thought about Mr. Haskins. He always had a smile for you and as a student you were never afraid to go and talk to him. I am so sorry for your loss, and I will keep you as a family in my prayers.
